They already know the kit formula — short-sleeve dri-fit + UV sleeves (Ben Johns style). They are not shopping for 'sun protection as a category.' They are shopping for the stay-put version of a kit they already wear: arm coverage without the mid-game slide, without greasy SPF drip, and without becoming a fishing-shirt player.
Jordan is forty-one, plays outdoor pickleball four mornings a week in suburban Phoenix, and has already solved half the problem. The kit is set: favorite sweat-wicking short-sleeve tee, white or grey UV arm sleeves when the tubes cooperate, wide brim on high-UV days — "this is what Ben Johns does," and that sentence is how open-play paddles over any remaining style objection. Sleeves stopped reading as medical cosplay the day the sport made them standard kit; a player on the forums put it plainly: they used to only see "Asian grandmas" in sun sleeves, and now they are glad the look is normalized.
What is not solved is the mid-game pull-up. Tubes start fine, then creep below the short-sleeve hem by game two. Someone asked the exact question Jordan has muttered between points: "How do you keep them from slipping down?" Another player already answered with the form factor that maps onto Furey — connected golf-shawl sleeves with a strip of material across the shoulders so they "absolutely stay in place," because "the other type would slide down too much." Cheap multipacks still get treated like socks when the elastic dies. That is the product gap: not "do sleeves work," but "will they stay kit without babysitting."
Jordan has also tried the heavy Columbia PFG and fishing-shirt path and rejected it as too heavy and hot; tried a long-sleeve tee that felt like the body was inside a "blast furnace"; tried early-only starts and still hears south Florida friends say seven and eight a.m. can be brutally humid. Sunscreen is the original enemy — dripping off by an eight a.m. start, "gross when sweating," and still leaving tan-line comments for people who play three to five days a week in places like Hawaii. A same-temps Arizona day-to-day test sticks in memory: sunscreen only left them drained after two hours; sleeves day felt much cooler and not nearly as drained.
The emotional job is not "discover sun sleeves." It is keep the short-sleeve identity, kill the slide, skip the arm lotion, finish multi-game mornings less cooked, and never become a fishing-tournament silhouette just to cover forearms. National mean age for the sport sits around the mid-thirties with twenty-five to thirty-four often the largest band, but outdoor multi-hour UV-hour players still include plenty of fifty-to-seventy open-play regulars. Market to the heat and the hours — roasted in Florida, near one hundred in Arizona — not "seniors only medical gear." Furey wins if it is the connected under-layer that finally makes the kit they already believe in stop failing mid-session.
On a good outdoor day the stack works: dry-fit short sleeve, sleeves that stay, arms feel like 'the coolest part of my body,' fatigue after two hours is manageable, and nobody clocks the look as medical gear — it reads as what pros wear. Jordan finishes open play without reapplying lotion to arms and without mid-rally sleeve tug. The sport already gave social permission; the gear just has to not betray it.
On a problem-active day the tubes have slid below the short-sleeve hem by game two, sunscreen is dripping into the eyes or off the forearms by mid-morning, a fishing shirt bought 'for sun' is trapping heat like a blast furnace, or tan-line comments land after another Hawaii/FL week of 3–5 outdoor sessions. The player is forced to choose between looking like a fishing-shirt convert, stopping to re-lotion greasy arms, or playing unprotected. That is the purchase moment — not abstract UV education.
Confidence: High on kit formula (short-sleeve + sleeves), SPF aversion, heat debate, tube-slip, and pro-normalization (dense r/Pickleball verbatim). High on connected golf-shawl as stay-put analog (Momsome). Medium on national demo numbers (SFIA/Pickleheads secondary summaries — re-verify before paid claims). Low on first-person skin-cancer confessionals (fewer than tennis/golf this wave). No Furey product present in threads. · 36 verified quotes · 17 sources

Hope and comfort peak when the short-sleeve + sleeves stack feels cooler than SPF-only days. Frustration spikes mid-session when tubes slide or lotion drips. Research peaks after a bad heat day or after watching pros. Elastic death of cheap tubes creates a monthly consumable loop Furey can interrupt with stay-put premium. Ad delivery: early morning pre-play scroll (gear packing) and post-session evening after a roasted day.

Claim ladder for pickleball (no cancer-prevention claims): 1) KIT FIT — Show favorite short-sleeve dri-fit + Furey continuous arms (Ben Johns formula visual without false endorsement). Identity proof beats UPF jargon. 2) STAY-PUT — Side-by-side: tube sleeve slide mid-movement vs connected one-piece under hem. Use community language: 'absolutely stay in place' / 'slide down too much.' 3) HEAT — Multi-game outdoor day: white/light sleeves, optional water pour, 'less drained than SPF-only' narrative; explicit contrast to PFG/fishing LS 'too heavy and hot' and blast-furnace tees. Airflow up short-sleeve reason. 4) SPF ESCAPE — Drip / gross / tan-line failures on arms; clothing covers the lotion zone players hate most. 5) UPF 50+ as fabric category standard with honest caveats (wet/stretch; not a face/neck/hands system; no cancer cure language). 6) DEMO CASTING — Mix ~30s competitive and 50–70 outdoor regulars; never seniors-only medical casting. 7) PRICE — Against sock-pack rebuy + mid-game fiddle, not against $8 multipack unit cost alone.
Heavy fishing shirts and some long-sleeve tees trap heat — players call them too heavy or a blast furnace. The kit community prefers short-sleeve dri-fit + arm sleeves so arms are covered while air still moves up the shirt sleeve. Many players report sleeves as the coolest zone or much less drained than SPF-only multi-hour days; humid no-breeze days are the honest caveat — light colors and a water pour between games are common tactics.
Separate tubes are the default — and the default complaint is sliding plus elastic that dies until you replace them like socks. Furey is a connected one-piece under-layer form factor, in the same problem family as the 'golf shawl' sleeves players already praise for staying put.
Yes — that is the point. The winning community formula is favorite sweat-wicking short-sleeve tee + UV arm coverage, not replacing your kit with a fishing shirt.
On uncovered skin (face, neck, hands, any gaps) yes. Furey is for continuous arm coverage so you can stop lotioning the zone players hate most under sweat.
No. Public participation summaries put average age around the mid-30s with 25–34 often the largest band. We design for multi-hour outdoor UV sessions — common across competitive 20s–40s and high-engagement 65+ outdoor regulars — not 'seniors only' medical gear.
Players say loose long sleeves feel/perform different, and a loose shirt with tight long sleeves can look silly. Sleeves keep short-sleeve torso venting — named as the main reason short sleeves run cooler — while still covering arms.
UPF 50 fabric is category-standard language for blocking ~98% of UV in lab fabric tests. Real-world protection depends on fit, stretch, and wetness. We do not claim cancer prevention. Use as continuous fabric coverage alongside smart habits.
Multipacks train a disposable habit when elastic fails. You're paying for connected stay-put architecture and under-kit apparel intent — fewer mid-game adjustments and less rebuy churn — not for the cheapest grams of fabric.
I used to think the choice was sunscreen or a fishing shirt. Sunscreen drips by the second game. Fishing shirts run hot. Long-sleeve tees felt like a blast furnace. Then the court meta became obvious: keep your favorite short-sleeve dri-fit, cover the arms. The only part that still broke? Tubes that slide. Furey is the connected under-layer version — stay-put arm coverage that doesn't ask you to change sports.
Open play. Arizona heat. Two days, same hours. SPF only: hot as hell, drained after two hours. Sleeves day: much cooler, not nearly as drained. If your arms are the first thing that cooks — or the first thing you lotion — try continuous coverage that stays under a short sleeve. No fishing-shirt cosplay required.
Someone on r/Pickleball already described the product we make: Connected sleeves with a strip across the shoulders so they absolutely stay in place. The other type slides down too much. Furey is that idea as under-kit apparel — UPF 50+ claimed fabric, one piece, built for multi-game outdoor days. Keep the short sleeve. Skip the arm SPF. Stop the mid-game tug.
Stay-Put Kitchen Demo (6–15s) — player in short-sleeve dri-fit at the kitchen line; cut between cheap tubes migrating mid-dink vs Furey connected piece unmoving under the hem. On-screen: 'the other type would slide down too much.' End on pack + $49.
Roasted in May / Not Drained (static or UGC) — split panel: SPF-only 'drained after two hours' vs sleeves day 'MUCH cooler.' Arizona/Florida parking-lot after open play. Super: multi-game outdoor, not gym.
Anti-Fishing-Shirt Kit Tour (carousel) — Card1 fishing/PFG heat fail, Card2 blast-furnace LS tee, Card3 Ben Johns-style short sleeve + sleeves cultural permission (no false endorsement), Card4 Furey under hem stay-put, Card5 women's loose tee + arms. Headline stack: keep pickleball identity.

Sleeves are something I always go back and forth on. They are good for sun protection, but they are warmer than just bare skin evaporating your sweat. So you just need to balance sun protection vs overheating. You could always pour some water on your arms between games and probably get the best of both worlds.

I wear long sleeves wool shirts, humid and hot jersey summer. I avoid sunscreen at all costs.

Agree with others on the arm sleeves. I wear them whenever I play during the day. They work well with dry fit shirts. They keep me from getting overexposed to the sun as well as having a cooling effect as they get moist with perspiration.

I play outdoors in south Florida and right now it is brutally hot and humid even in the early AM when I play… So starting tomorrow I am going to wear a headband/bandana in addition to an arm sleeve and a wrist band.

AZ here so its getting near 100 while playing. Do the long sleeves actually keep you cooler since they prevent direct contact from the sun and the skin or do they make you hotter because of lack of ventilation or is it entirely dependent on having the right long sleeves that breathe?

Sun is out now in sunny Southern California, and I'm shopping for a long-sleeve sun shirt. Thanks for sharing.

I would be interested in hearing people options on them. I wore loose fit, quick dry long sleeve shirts along with compression pants with shorts over them. I am in PA and a lot of people opt for sun screen. However, like you, I would prefer not.

Why doesn't he just wear a long sleeve shirt?

Alternatively you should consider sun sleeves. I don't care for loose long sleeves. The sun sleeves have light compression and cool your arms when you perspire.
